It’s Fly Time!!!!

Fly control should be on your list of activities with livestock. Since we had a mild winter, you can expect earlier and greater fly presence from horn flies and stable flies in our area. Further north the face fly is a problem.

Besides taking blood from the animal, flies can carry diseases from anaplasmosis to pink eye. Horn flies originate from eggs laid in the manure and live from 7 to 21 days. They have piercing and sucking mouthparts which allow them to take 20 – 40 meals per day which can prevent cattle from gaining weight.

Over 200 horn flies per animal indicate the need of fly control and that can be difficult if your neighbor does not practice fly control. Stable flies will feed on any warm blooded animal including humans. The entire life cycle from egg to adult is generally 3 to 6 weeks.

So how does one control horn and stable flies? The best way is to start treating early. There are a number of control methods. There are sprays, dusts, back rubs, pour on, fly tags, mineral mixes, fly blocks, and feed additives containing growth hormone IGR.

The method of control you use will depend on your situation, but most of all CONTROL flies in your herd and premises. Contact TCFS and let us help you develop a good program for you!
